Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.
Standard I of the ISTE Standards for Teachers states that educators should give students opportunities to be creative and reflective within a real-world context and to use digital tools and resources in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Educators must also promote collaboration among the students. Not only should educators promote the use of collaborative tools, creativity, and reflection, they should be examples of how to use those tools properly. I believe I have met this standard with the discussion forum assignment I created through nabble.com. The students have to answer questions in regards to a case study, which involves real-world issues. They may use the resources page of the Introduction to Hemostasis webpage as a digital resource. The discussion forum also promotes collaboration through students commenting on each others response. The students are also asked to reflect on a real-world situation by thinking about what happened the last time they cut themselves. My use of a variety of media to present materials models creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. I created a podcast, movie, and Edupuzzle. By posting my lecture notes and PowerPoints on Google Docs, my students are allowed to easily share their on ideas and thoughts by adding notes to the documents that all may see. You may find all lesson materials on the lesson materials page of my Introduction to Hemostasis website. The link to the website, as well as my discussion forum, is found below. My learning goal for Standard I is to learn how to better promote collaboration among my students in my on-line classes.
- Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
- Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources
- Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
- Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments
